Amsterdam tipsTop 5 things to do in Amsterdam:

  1. Immerse yourself in culture and art at the Museumsplein

At Museumsplein you find a variety of outstanding museums: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, the Moco Museum as well as the Royal Concertgebouw – it is the cultural heart of Amsterdam. The lively square in the middle of the impressive buildings is a place where open-air exhibitions and markets take place. The large paddling pool invites visitors to cool of their feet in the summer and offers an outdoor ice rink in winter.

2. Walk in the neighbourhood of Jordaan

Jordaan is one of Amsterdam’s most charming neighbourhoods. Its quaint buildings as well as the narrow streets and canals form one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in Amsterdam. A variety of art galleries, antique shops, courtyard gardens as well as cozy restaurants and bars are located in this area. Eastwards from the Prinsengracht the streets merge into one of Amsterdam’s most well-known shopping experiences, called “De Negen Straatjes” (“the nine streets”).

3. Canal cruise driving underneath the numerous bridges

The canal belt of Amsterdam is world-famous and even protected by UNESCO, as it a special construction that was built in the 17th century. The canals make the city picturesque and unique at every time of the day, especially in the evening with all the bridges lit up with lights. There is no better way to see and get to know the city than through a canal tour where you learn more about the city and its history – for example why houses back in the days were built with only a little amount or only small-sized windows. You can choose between various canal tours such as hop-on-hop-off, nighttime cruises as well as tours with food or drinks – simply choose it according to your wishes.

4. Get to see how Anne Frank and her family lived

Learn more about how diarist Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for two years after fleeing persecution in Germany during World War II. Visit the museum and the house in the Prinsengracht 263 where Anne and her family lived at that time. Be aware that waiting times are long and tickets are usually sold out very quickly for the day, which is why it is wise to book online (a few weeks) in advance.

5. Catch a ferry to Amsterdam Noord

While many visitors focus on visiting the centre of Amsterdam, it is a good tip to also explore the north of Amsterdam past Amsterdam Central Station and the river IJ. Simply hop on the ferry that will stop at several drop off points including the NDSM which is known as a cultural hotspot. Enjoy food and drinks at the waterside or join one of the frequent festivals and events. Especially on a sunny day in the afternoon and at sunset this place unfolds its true magic. And the best about it: the ferry is free.
